Boys and Girls, and The Universe's Quarky Sense of Humor

SQUIRREL!

I was in the car with my husband Jon the other day, we were discussing the innate differences between boys and girls. For the most part, girls gravitate toward "girl stuff" and boys to "boy stuff." Just then, a fat wheeled, lifted pickup approached us in the other lane and swerved IN ORDER TO HIT a fox squirrel. The Universe certainly does have a sense of humor . . . the topic of our discussion was well illustrated (I know not all of you boys would do this, and I certainly reacted "like a girl" to this act) and . . . the squirrel hopped off the road, alive, with everything in tact!  Whew!

I was raised in an environment and society that encouraged us girls to be the high-profile types. As an adult, I have learned over time that this does not suit me. It has taken years for me to be comfortable telling people that I am a homemaker, and I enjoy this profession- just as much as teaching health and wellness. As a girl and young woman, I had a difficult time accepting my feminine side. What I have found is, the more I allow myself to bring out my true nature, the more happy and balanced I feel.

The topic of this conversation, the nature of boys and girls, goes back several weeks to a TED conference that Jon and I watched. The speaker did a great job of riding the fine line on the subject of encouraging and supporting girls and young women to go for high-level positions, but it still raised questions for me to consider in life.  Here is the talk.

I think it is more important to help a child find their passions in life than to teach that they are capable of being in a leadership position. Encouraging a child to be in a leadership position implies that this is a more important role than being part of the support team, when in actuality, we need everyone to play their unique role for things to work.

I wrote my book, You-niversal Self-care, not only to teach people about typology and health and wellness, but most of all, to help people to be comfortable with who they are as unique individuals.

  1. Nice post Tara. I agree with you. The most important thing is to be your authentic self and know your passions.
