How Long Does it Take to Write a Book?

One of the most common questions I have gotten about the experience of writing my first book 'You-niversal Self-care' is, "How long did it take you to write it?"

I won't leave you hanging... I figured it would have taken me about 3-4 months of a standard 40-hour work week to write the book. But the truth is there is so much studying, planning, preparation and re-doing, that it always takes longer.

Here is my second baby and, well, you are seeing it develop practically right in front of your eyes!

If you've already downloaded the first version of the cookbook, it was bare-bones... filled with stock photos and lots of funny 'Lorem Ipsum' text!

You're seeing some of what it takes to create such a piece of work! YOU ARE A PART OF THE PROCESS!

I'm adding more recipes regularly so stay tuned to my email updates for the latest version! (You will get them automatically when you get the cookbook.)

Click on the image of my cookbook to download the PDF or iBook for free!

Would you like to be a part of it? Contact me to be a contributor!  info (at) TarasBook (dot) com

Note, if you are downloading the iBooks version (which you should if you can because you'll have access to a dynamic Table of Contents, Glossary and soooooo much more!) delete the previous version from your iBooks library and then download the new one from the link above or link from the email update. Enjoy!

My 11+ Most Favorite Natural Remedies and Preventatives for the Cold & Flu Season

We call it preventing the "Cold & Flu" but let's be real...

What we're really talking about is preventing or diminishing

miserable symptoms and valuable time away from work, school and life!

In Weight Free Wellness I promote keeping things simple. This means supporting the body by giving it what it needs to do it's job. This includes water, rest, exercise, fresh food, to name the basics.

Sometimes... Let me rephrase... Oftentimes our body needs extra support to deal with all of the stressors we encounter, not to mention fending off this season's new bug!

Let's start with Prevention

Traditional Chinese Medicine teaches us that dark fruits and seeds support our vital force energy, directly affecting and improving our immune health.

This leads me to my first fav'...

#1     Elderberry Syrup

It's simple to make, tastes good and is a well-rounded recipe with ingredients to support the body. In the description in my Cookbook you'll get tips on how to source Elderberries and details on making and even gifting this highly valuable syrup!

#2     Raindrop Remedy Formula

You know that achy feeling you get at the onset of a nasty bug? I started getting that a couple of days ago. I started taking the above remedies as well as rubbing my own mixture of several therapeutic essential oils on my feet and along my spine. The powerful therapeutic grade essential oils are naturally antibacterial and antiviral and help the body to have a strong defense. Additionally, if I feel the aches of the flu coming, I like to massage this oil along my spine at night. I feel much better the next morning!

How to make the Raindrop Formula:

I add the following *Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils to a 3 oz. bottle of massage oil: 4 drops of oregano, 4 drops of thyme, 4 drops of basil, 4 drops cypress, 4 drops of wintergreen, 8 drop of marjoram, 8 drops of Aroma Seiz, 8 drops of peppermint, 8 drops of Valor

Ordering one of each bottle will be enough oils to make at least 10 massage bottles of Raindrop mixture.

(Consult your physician or pharmacist for drug interactions and read instructions before using oils. Epileptics should not use wintergreen.)

*Anything other than therapeutic grade oils can be toxic.

Find the Raindrop Oils here.

#3     Oil-infused Handwashes, etc.

Another preventative I will mention is actually a group of products from the Young Living line brand of Therapeutic Essential Oil products.

Why the name Thieves?

The story goes that the recipe for Thieves combination of herbs was passed down from the time of the Black Plague- when a group of bandits where found to not only be looting dead bodies (not all that uncommon) but surviving The Plague! They were apprehended but the authorities struck a deal to let them free if they shared the recipe for the cause of their amazing immunity. Here it is in an essential oil combination, waterless hand sanitizer, foaming hand soap and a handful of new products. They are perfect for travel too!

Keep in purse, car, diaper bag or on your desk and counter
for natural protection during cold and flu season!
Available here

#4     Vitamin D

This is the form of Vitamin D that I like the best. The first time I took it I felt my body quickly revive with energy; not the caffeine-like energy, but a deeper energy like what you feel upon awakening from a deep, refreshing sleep.

Consult your primary health practitioner to discuss the form and amount of vitamin D that may be right for you.

Nutri-Dyn Vitamin D3

#5     Zinc

I first learned the effectiveness of zinc when I had a severe cold. After taking a couple of doses I felt much stronger and have not had more than mild symptoms of Cold or Flu in the couple of years since.

The cough drops in the image are also a simple and palatable way to get zinc and the benefits of elderberry. I use these only in a pinch as they are rather sugary.

Consult a practitioner for proper dosage and usage of zinc. While supplements can be extremely helpful, misuse can cause imbalance among other things. Zinc needs to be taken with food- it easily upsets the stomach.

Trace Minerals Ionic Zinc
Zand Elderberry Zinc

#6     Mushrooms

Fungi are starting to get the recognition they deserve. I take this tincture nearly daily during Cold & Flu season. Unlike many herbs, these fungi can be taken on a daily basis. To make my supplementing regimen simple, I usually add some to my Elderberry syrup mixture. Check out the TED talk!

More information here.

But what do you do when you already have come down with something?  :(

All of the above will still help!

Here are some of my favorite remedies that address more specific conditions...

#7     Sinus Support

Could a sinus infection quite possibly be the worst of Cold & Flu symptoms?

I start taking this remedy up to 2 capsules 3 times per day at the onset of symptoms. Nipping sinus infections in the bud while they are sprouting is SUPER IMPORTANT! ALSO, yes, this is very important... eliminate sugar from your diet until you are 100% better. Especially if you are suffering from or are prone to very intense sinus infections, even orange juice can exacerbate such an issue.

This can be found at some local herb shops as it is sold by local distributors. You can also order online here. Enter Sinus Support in the search box below my photo.

I keep a couple of bottles of Sinus Support on hand. When it's needed, it's needed ASAP!
Available here.

#8     Breathe Again

Earth-types are very prone to having bronchial infections. What is an Earth-type?

Taking the Free Body-type Assessment from my book is the perfect way to learn more. Get it here!

When I feel even the slightest cough or congestion starting in my chest I apply this oil. It's been very affective for me, friends and family. I keep it in my purse at all times- you never know when someone may need it!

I started feeling chest congestion. Put this on. Went away that day!
Available here.

#9     Oscillococcinum Homeopathic Remedy

Homeopathic remedies are weak but very strong. They are energetic natural medicines that have been around since the early 19th century. If you would like to learn more, here is a helpful article about homeopathic remedies from Dr. Weil's website. I personally get better results from herbs than homeopathics, but I have seen many cases where homeopathic remedies have helped people greatly. To me, they are an energetic medicine. Keep them away from electronic devices and especially cellular phones. Tap a couple of times in the container before using... those are just a few tricks ;)

Available at many local stores and online. Search

Boiron Oscillococcinum Natural Flu Relief

#10     Gypsy Cold Care

Elder is so good, Traditional Medicinals puts it in their remedies too! While this is very comforting to drink (especially with honey) when you have a cold, I use it also when it's just "cold & flu season" and when those around me are sniffling and sneezing. If you're new to these teas, try the Seasonal Sampler which includes the Gypsy Cold Care.

#11     Egg Drop Soup

Last but certainly not least...

We know that homemade chicken soup is THE classic remedy for those who are ailing, but few have the time to make it!

Here's a solution. My Egg Drop soup!

You still get the benefits of the warm, nourishing chicken stock (I suggest you make several batches at once and freeze them in quart and pint size containers- one of the few things I freeze for later use... but I elaborate on this in my cookbook...)

In addition to the health-promoting stock, this recipe calls for onions which are in the allium family along with garlic which are known for their immune-boosting properties and in the herbal realms are known to help the bronchial and sinus regions.

For seasoning I add quality salt which helps those who are losing precious fluids and white pepper (to taste) which helps to open up passages to allow fever to naturally escape and to holistically cool the body.

Eggs are highly nutritious, and can be difficult to digest for anyone who is ailing or otherwise has weak digestion- but most can easily eat them in this soup.

Once stock is thawed (if needed) you can serve this in just 20 minutes!

especially those suffering from cold and flu.

PS...  With cold and Flu season upon us I'm shuffling through my natural remedy cabinet and lo and behold I find more wonderful remedies!

#12     Neti-stik

The neti pot came into the spotlight when Oprah featured it as a must-have. Now, it doesn't seem such a craft thing to do- pour salt water through your nostril, carefully tipping the head to guide it through the sinus cavity to then pour out the other nostril.

I'm happy to say that there is an easier way to do this!

Check out this Neti-stik. Here's how they describe their wonderful product!

This compact aromatherapy inhaler fits easily into your pocket or purse for quick relief. Neti Stik™ contains an energizing blend of peppermint, eucalyptus, menthol, and lavender essential oils. Use alone, or as a perfect complement to daily Neti Pot™ use.
  • Temporary relief for stuffy noses
  • Clear and open, invigorating feeling
  • Great for travel and on the go
  • Extends the benefits of nasal irrigation
  • 2 oz
Neti-Stik

I wish you well-ness this Cold & Flu season - and always!

I must emphasize... the contents of this blog and website is not medical advice. Herbs are medicine and it's important to check with a trusted health practitioner regarding your herbs and pharmaceuticals. I am sharing what helps and has worked for me.

Wishing you well-ness!

Simple Solutions to Drink More Water

When talking health and wellness one of the first topics I bring up is drinking plenty of clean water.

So many people comment that they don’t like the taste of water!

Well, water is so important to our bodies that this simply cannot be an excuse!

In my free cookbook I give a simple recipe (honestly you could figure it out by looking at this picture) to make refreshing water. Did you know that these fruits and vegetable do more for our body than just please our tastebuds!?

Get This Recipe Here... and Much More!

Here's a shortcut...

When in a pinch, I add Therapeutic Grade Essential oils to my water if I need a change or something refreshing.

Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils are fit for consumption (note, not all oils can be used internally). My favorites to add to my water are: Citrus Fresh, Tangerine, Orange, Lemon, and Peppermint. If you are taking prescription medications be sure to check with your pharmacist before ingesting essential oils. Use only metal or glass containers when adding oils to your water as these oils can break down plastics- plus, it tastes better!

These citrus fruits also have the added benefits of naturally cooling the body and supporting healthy liver function.

Add just a couple of drops to your large glass or container of water, sip and enjoy!

Answers to common questions and concerns:

Whenever I start to drink more water I have to go to the bathroom all the time!

We are a very driven society and our adrenal grands (that sit on and affect our kidneys) are most often either on overdrive or are totally depleted. Both will cause frequent urination- one from the constant agitation from the adrenals, the other from a lack of "energy" to keep urine in the body. The latter is often accompanied by incontinence, lack of sexual drive, anal fissures and more.

It's imperative that we still drink water. Mineral-rich spring water will especially help those with adrenal fatigue. Also, naturally active Air-types who are adrenally exhausted need help in "wetting the sponge" so that they can better absorb and recirculate water within them rather than it just running through them (or metaphorically over the sponge).

Here's an example I like to use.

When you are cleaning a very dirty surface, you need to use a lot of solvent (namely water) initially. You may go through several buckets of warm water to them be able to do the finishing touches with just a couple of buckets of water and cleaner.

If you have lived the standard life in food and habits and have not had enough clean water along the way (which is the standard) your "floors" are pretty dirty. When you begin to drink more water (adrenal function aside) you may be flushing out more water simply because the body is taking the opportunity to cleanse.

I drink about 2 quarts of water per day. After addressing cleansing, healthy adrenal function, caffeine consumption and my attitude about stressors; frequent urination is no longer an issue.

What "type" of water do you drink?

The information and studies on the best sources of water have changed regularly over the years and we have tried all kinds of solutions to have healthy water.

At our house, we have gone from carbon and UV filtering well water (when we had well water), to buying Reverse Osmosis water at the store, to installing an expensive RO system, to now buying spring water.

At the beginning of this journey, we looked into getting water at a local spring. There is a well-known natural spring near us in Minnesota on, yes, Spring Road. We were elated at first that such a treasured source could be relatively so near, but as I researched more, I did not feel comfortable about diving into this idea.

While the source was tested by the city for safety, the efficacy of the water could not be guaranteed. I spoke with the city official who worked in this department and I gained what I felt was some helpful information.

This spring is located in a narrow gorge that once must have poured water from the ancient shore of a tributary to what is now the Minnesota river.

The spring is in a populated Twin City suburb, and the city official explained that while the spring does indeed “spring” forth from the ground, it is more likely run-off water from streets and fertilized lawns that comes from the surrounding steep hills these days, than the naturally filtered water we might have enjoyed many years ago.

This made a lot of sense to me, and while I desired the naturally mineralized water from a spring; I also did not want to inadvertently contaminate our family.

Years and filtration systems later, we came upon this solution.

We order Mountain Valley spring water from a local distributor. Part of this solution came about because we now live in a suburban area where we can receive delivery of the large 5-gallon glass bottles.

Since we have switched from our RO water to this spring water my husband and I have felt aches, pains and even nagging “moods” go away. I’m not exaggerating... I don’t do that...

Since I’m asked so often what we do for water, I thought I’d share.

I will update this when and if this changes.

Wishing you well-ness!

I can't believe I'm calling it this . . . But here's an ancient "hack" for memorizing herbal remedies.

I am thankful that there are models for learning herbalism that go beyond memorizing which herb is for what.

How did the ancients discover and recall such remedies anyways? It seems in much the same way any valuable knowledge is passed on; through what we would call, 'story'.

There are 'stories' that even as adults we ask, "Is or was this a real event?"

An ancient "Hack" for memorizing herbal remedies. TarasBook.com

I have come to believe that there is purpose in causing this disharmony of thought- it causes us to go beyond the black and white thinking we are taught to master. A type of koan perhaps.

Master Herbalist Matthew Wood gives many Bible references in his material which is likely the text that many of us in the Western world have questioned at one point or another whether to interpret literally or figuratively.

As Matthew often illustrates, it's in the archetypal, the metaphoric understandings that we discover deeper meaning.

So, whether conveying a message via 'story' is done to aid the memory and carry on wisdom or to peel back the veil of our own worldly understanding--among other reasons-- seeing our world through Archetypes and metaphor is like a secret language.

Everything exists in this 'secret world' of Archetype; and it all has a Wonderland-like quality, revealing answers that are foggy in our world, but seems so plain and normal in this other world.

A great place to begin learning this language is through our bodies since we are a combination of 'other worlds' within: the physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual self. We live in our body, mind, spirit until we no longer do; so it seems like the perfect tool, does it not?

As we develop familiarity with our bodies we can also develop a relationship with herbs.

As we learn about the herbs, we gain a new perspective on ourselves and our lives, and vice versa.

Read the following excerpt from Matthew Wood, world renown Master Herbalist . . . it may have a message for you.

"Large Intestine.
When the child masters toilet training he or she feels the satisfaction of a job well done.  Rewards are immediate.  The child feels an increased sense of self-worth and autonomy which allows he or she to relate to society as a whole person.  The large intestine is thus associated with the function of satisfaction and self-governance.  If there is a problem here the person may feel inadequate, unsatisfied and depressed.  Patterns of codependency are likely.  Western astrology, through the Scorpio rulership of the colon, emphasizes addictive relationship, while traditional Chinese medicine, through the metal rulership, emphasizes depression.  In an extreme form, frustration generates “intestine hatred” where there is a codependency relationship with the object of hatred."

Matthew and I will be teaching the Archetypes and the Human Body along with Herbs in our class on July 11th and 12th. Join us!

Warmly,
Tara

Natural Solutions and Remedies for Dry, Flaky and Cracked Skin - I Wish I Had 20 years Ago

Head's up - this is probably my longest post, but for the person suffering with skin issues, it's a treasure trove of information. I am not saying this to toot my own horn, it's just that I wished I had had this information in one place many years ago, so here it is for you. With Love, Tara

Painful skin, no matter what the reason, can be very challenging to deal with- I know, I've been learning from my skin for over 20 years.

Dry skin is a key indicator of the Air-type Body-type. What's "Your" Body-type?
Get the Free Body-typing Assessment!

I first recall my skin being very dry at the age of 9. It was so dry that many clothes would cause a low-grade but noticeable discomfort throughout the day. I would not wear jeans because of the burning friction they caused at my waistline and ankles especially. It was so dry that my hands and feet would crack and bleed, the only ease coming from a thick coat of oily lotion; not to heal the issue, but to create a barrier between my inflamed skin and whatever could cause increased disturbance.

My skin was so dry I avoided swimming pools for years. The chlorinated water would cause a burning sensation all over my body that did not rinse off in the shower. My first experience in the ocean was similar, only it was at least 10 times worse. What was supposed to be a joyful first experience with my beloved cousin, Grandma and Grandpa, turned into great disappointment. Fortunately, my Grandma was prepared with Corn Huskers and Coco Butter lotions. And fortunately, the rest of the trip was positively memorable!

Through the years, it became normal to walk to accommodate my dry, cracked feet; to be very uncomfortable in my own skin during the fall and winter months, to feel piercing pain when I simply washed my hands due to the cracks in my hands. As I came of age I became more determined to find my own solutions- frustrated that the professionals that I was brought to could not.

I have realized many things over the years about this condition, which has greatly improved. Mostly, I have learned to work with my own body, rather than working on it: To accept that my body leans towards having a lot of Air-type symptoms and use this as feedback and information, rather than criticizing myself, getting frustrated and judging myself unfairly. Body-Typing is the theme of my book, You-niversal Self-care.

Get the Free Body-typing Assessment!

I am sharing some uncommon remedies, things that one may not think of or be told by specialists; in order to help anyone else out there who may be suffering such a condition.

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and traditional medicine practitioners know that there are many, many clues that the skin gives in regard to the overall condition of the body.

The skin is the outward manifestation of the intestinal system- once the same unit in the very early stages of fetal development. For this reason the skin especially indicates the condition of the digestive system, namely the intestinal tract.

There are many stories and lengthy explanations that can accompany each of these items, but for sake of space I will leave most of them out. I freely share such experiences in my classes and one-on-one sessions.

I was going to post a picture of dry, cracked skin but it was painful to just look at them. If you have dry skin you know what it looks and feels like. Instead, I'd like to share some hope. This is a photo of me with no body makeup and relatively light makeup on my face, and no photo touch-ups. This is the skin I enjoy today. I get compliments all the time, but most of all, I am free from pain!

Tara Baklund - Natural Skin Remedies - TarasBook.com

Here is a list of solutions that helped me greatly.

This is not medical advice, only a list of key things that have worked for me to heal painful skin conditions that I experienced.

  • Make sure the water you bathe in is "soft" water. I currently live in Minnesota where we have iron and mineral-rich water. I find that a sediment filter also helps a great deal.
  • Do an elimination diet. I found the 7-Day Detox Miracle book very helpful for this- and there are some simple remedies that are well-described in the book for natural cleansing.
  • You will likely find you are sensitive to certain foods; likely gluten and/or dairy. Make a commitment to remember how good you felt when not eating these foods as motivation to no longer consume them. The more severe your original condition, the easier it is to do this. I highly recommend the book Wheat Belly for great information on the topic of gluten sensitivity.
  • At this point you will be gaining more familiarity with your body, and how it reacts to natural remedies. I would go to a Naturopathic Doctor to do biofeedback to test whether you have conditions such as: Candidiasis, a low-grade bacterial or viral infection to name a few. This type of person should be able to lead you through a step by step process of cleansing and balancing the systems of the body. Some Chiropractors have this equipment and training. When in doubt, seek a referral. The right person will equip you with remedies and information that will have quick results- as long as you follow their instructions thoroughly!
  • Bathe in tepid to lukewarm water as to not strip oils from the skin. Bathe every-other-day if possible, washing key areas with a washcloth. A shallow bath also works well. Only use soap in the "pits" of the body. Avoid harsh soaps.
  • Eat clean foods- as close to organic as possible, especially meat and dairy products, root vegetables and delicate fruits and vegetables like spinach and raspberries.
  • Consider the metaphoric message your skin is sending. Could it be that: You feel that the barrier between you and the outside world is weak? You are not or do not feel fully nourished--of the major organs, the skin receives last priority in nourishment.
  • Use only natural lotions and oils on the skin without synthetic fragrances. Could you eat it? Then you can put it on your skin. Try oils like sesame, sweet almond, jojoba, grapeseed and coconut, etc. Apply after bathing to hold in the moisture.
  • Your Naturopath or other natural health practitioner you are working with should at some point address digestion. Depending on your condition this may not be the first priority. It's very important that your body can digest and assimilate food well for nutrients- especially oils.
  • Especially in the summer, consume cooling drinks like natural fruit juices, cucumber water and aloe (meat, not the entire filet). This may be indicated for some people year- around as some dry-skin conditions are due to internal heat. Much like hanging a wet shirt over a heat register, internal heat (a Traditional Chinese Medicine term) can similarly dry the skin.
  • Be patient and kind with yourself and your skin. Be open to receiving any messages your body is giving you.
  • Whether it's a Naturopath, a Chiropractor, Herbalist or other natural health practitioner, make sure they are addressing your specific body and condition, rather than running you through a "dry skin regimen" (note- This is different than if a Naturopath runs you through a biofeedback process, which tests and remedies in a particular order. Biofeedback by it's nature is an individualized treatment). Every body is different and should be addressed as so.
  • Oh, and let us not forget about water! If a person is already experiencing dis-ease, it is necessary to drink even more water. Imagine you are charged with the task of cleaning a very dirty floor. This task calls for more water than a moderately dirty floor, right? Make sure you consume a minimum of 1/2 x (your body weight in pounds)= oz. of water. Not: chlorinated, fluorinated, bottled or distilled. We choose to add minerals to Reverse Osmosis water.

This is a good, basic list that will help you build a foundation for self-empowered health if you are diligent enough to explore, test, observe and explore some more.

Some of these solutions may seem almost too simple, but please don't under-estimate their importance and effectiveness.

Most of all, have compassion and love yourself along the way. Work with your body, not on it!

Wishing you well!

Homemade Body Scrub Recipe with Natural Alpha-hydroxy Acids

All Natural Homemade Sugar Scrub Recipe

Every body(type) can benefit from a good, exfoliating scrub.

I've been discovering and creating internal and external remedies for my skin for a very long time. My dominant Air Element tendencies show up in my skin. Since a young age I've had to remedy very dry, flaky skin.

Here is an external remedy skin remedy I created with adaptations for the other Body-types.

May your skin be refreshed and rejuvenated just how it likes it!

Earth-types tend to have naturally moist, soft skin. For this type of person I would recommend trying a significant variation of this recipe. Earth-types often do not need to moisturize, so most would probably be averse to trying this recipe, as the thought of having the residue of oil on their skin is not appealing. Try replacing the oils with an equal amount of honey, about 7 Tablespoons. This should give similar benefits, without the oily finish. Try an essential oil that is lively and invigorating like Grapefruit. (Grapefruit is a light-sensitive essential oil so be mindful about sun exposure within approximately 24 hours of use. In some cases sun exposure after applying this oil can cause an orange discoloration of the skin.)

Fire-types may gravitate towards the sugar and honey recipe adaptation for the Earth-types or the traditional recipe. Fiery people tend to be rather intense in their actions, so if you have Fire-type tendencies, be mindful to not scrub so vigorously. The sugar crystals can cause micro abrasions if used with force. Keep in mind that it is not just the scrubbing action that exfoliated the skin; the breaking down of the sugar creates naturally exfoliating, Alpha-hydroxy acids. Try a cooling or calming essential oil like Lavender in your scrub.

Air-types benefit greatly from this sugar scrub. The natural alpha-hydroxy acids and friction from the sugar crystals rubbed on the skin exfoliate the skin well; the oils followup and deeply nourish and moisturize. Be careful with delicate Air-type skin and gently exfoliate with this scrub. Try a calming and grounding essential oil like rose or myrrh. These oils are rather expensive if they are truly therapeutic grade and also well-known for their benefits to the skin, so use as many drops as you are willing. Another great option is Lavender or Orange. (Orange is a light-sensitive essential oil so be mindful about sun exposure within approximately 24 hours of use. In some cases sun exposure after applying this oil can cause an orange discoloration of the skin.)

Water-types may find the traditional version of the recipe best suited for them during the Fall and Winter months and the Earth-type honey variation for the Spring and Summer months. If I were dominant in the Water Element I would choose the suggested essential oil based on my secondary Body-type Element.

For use on the body only. Do no use scrub on the face, neck, and other areas of the body with delicate skin.

How I use the scrub:
The best time to do this is before bed so the benefit of the oils can soak in overnight.

Prepare by bringing your scrub, bath towel and wash cloth into the bathroom. You don't want to be fetching anything when your covered in oily scrub!

Accept the fact that you will be getting your shower or bathtub messy with scrub and oils. I find a bathtub to work best for this process.

Prepare as you would for a shower or bath i.e. putting hair up, undress, etc.

Scoop out the scrub with your finger tips and generously apply to your recently bathed or dry skin. Spread it over your skin and begin gently scrubbing in circular patterns, changing direction to encourage skin to slough off. Spend perhaps 30 seconds in one area (the lower leg for example) and move on to another section (upper leg).

When the lower body has been covered and scrubbed, start drawing a warm bath to sit in. As the bath fills start gently scrubbing up to your upper body one section at at time. You may only desire to fill the bath with a couple inches of water.

Stand or squat and do a final rinse with fresh water or a quick rinse in the shower and you're done!

Rinse the shower or bathtub immediately with very hot water and wipe down to clean and prevent build-up. Especially if you use Coconut butter, which hardens at room temperature, the oil will be very challenging to clean from the preparation bowls and in the bathroom if not at least rinsed with very hot water immediately.

Does this seem like a lot of work? Yeah, it takes a bit of effort. But if you have chronically dry or flaky skin it's especially worth the effort!

Enjoy!

Work Stress - Dealing With Other People's Stress Response

Dealing with Stressed Co-workers . . .  How can Body-typing Help?

When people learn that I teach body-typing and wellness, they are naturally curious to know which body-type they are and what it means. The conversation then quickly changes to the body-types of the people they are around the most: namely family and co-workers.

Understanding our body-type characteristics help us to understand our physical, mental and emotional strengths and weaknesses. My book, You-niversal Self-care is a guide to finding balance for each body-type.

Using body-typing to understand other people can helps us overall, to have healthier relationships.

Body-types their Work-stress Responses

It's easy to spot the person at work who, when stressed, will be stubborn, silent or even hold a grudge. These are some of the shadow characteristics of an Earth-type.

No-one wonders if the Fiery person is stressed. It's usually rather obvious in their brazen tone of voice and sharp comments.

Or how about the one who works at a quick pace, making rash decisions and looks visually shaken and stressed, or simply be Air-headed- the Air-type.

The Water-type may be the most mellow person in response to stress - or on the other hand, very emotional. The Earth-type can be very emotional too; the Earth has a lot of water and in body-typing, a lot of Water-type characteristics. One might think that a mellow stress response would be most easy to deal with, but not necessarily. This type of mellow-responder may avoid situations- which makes it challenging when a situation must be directly addressed.

I bet of you were naming off people as you read these brief descriptions :)

That's great! You've begun the journey of taking yourself out of the stressful situation and observing from a third person perspective. This makes the situation less personal and we can make wiser decisions from this perspective.

We cannot control others, right?

What we can do is choose how we view the situation. This perspective can lead us to making decisions that are right for the environment.

Story

Just the other day I had a person literally laugh at me right in my face. Ok, not right in my face, but a good 2 feet away. I've known him to be a very Fiery person and Fire-types are very active and reactive.

It was a long laugh so I had some time to think, thankfully! I went through all kinds of responses and his likely responses in my head and nothing seemed to be a viable option that would not result in more sharp responses.

In the end, I decided to say nothing. I gave him an every-day, kind smile and walked away in my normal way.

I realized that his response was about him, not about me. There was no need to engage then or even now.

Consider this the next time a person emotionally closes off, engulfs you in their flames, let's out in a stressed-Airy monologue or is seemingly unaware of their aloofness or irresponsibility. (Can you tell which Body-type response is which?)

The wisdom of Body-typing helps us to understand how to respond for environmental balance- whether it be your own body, your home-life or workplace.

Along with teaching and writing, I help run a business with my husband. I know what goes on in a work environment as someone who works in the environment and who facilitates things to run smoothly.

Body-typing Classes specifically geared towards helping co-workers to first understand their own nature, and then others' is very effective in creating a more harmonious and efficient environment. Available for companies of all sizes.

How Body-types Respond to Work-related Stress

We all have it.

A basic way of responding to stress.

It may be to:

  • "hunker down" and wait for the storm to pass
  • take action or demand that others do so
  • become anxious by trying to get as much done to "eliminate" the stressors
  • become very emotional, disengage or avoid the stressor
Each type of response correlates to a particular Body-type; respectively, Earth, Fire, Air and Water-types.

These are the shadow side of the body-types; meaning, we could create a more helpful response for the environment.

But we all have our "off-kilter" moments.

How you respond to stress tells you a lot about yourself- and most of all, how to lead a less stressed life.

I have a lot of Air-type tendencies and I can easily get caught in my mental "to-do" list. The mind is the Air-realm. (Not to be confused with imagination which is more Watery.)

Sometimes we need to push-through; like today I am cleaning up our books for a meeting with the bank and year-end. But I did make sure to take a nice break, Cat-asana (AKA Savasana or Relaxation Pose). It was lovely.  :)

Affordable Face Moisturizer That Works- The Old-Fashioned Way

Like many women I have tried so many kinds of skin care products. I have even spent what could be a small families' weekly grocery budget on skincare systems- no more!- and no more harsh chemicals!

From my years of study, inquiry and personal experimentation, I have gone back to many Old-Time remedies- often which are affordable and effective!

Guys- don't be afraid to try this! My husband uses this as a deoderant (glycerin has a natural hydrophillc tendency- it absorbs moisture, and brings it into/holds it to the skin). The rose scent goes away quite quickly.

Many of our grandmothers, great-grandmothers and so on, likely used Rose water or Rose Glycerin or a combination of these as a face moisturizer, toner, rinse. It has a gentle rose scent, which I found pleasing even though I do not usually care for the scent of rose. The kind that I get comes in a nice bottle that allows one to mist their face, neck and so on.

Within two weeks or less I noticed a definite improvement in clarity of my complexion- so much so that often times I do not wear foundation as a cover-up! When I do, I use the foundation more sparingly than before.

So what's special about Rose water and glycerin? Many lotions contain glycerin as an additive and it is a natural component in naturally made soaps (milk soaps). Glycerin helps the skin to retain moisture. Rose has long been known to have a calming, cooling and moisturizing affect- which makes it especially helpful for those with: rosacea, wind burn, dry skin and constitutions that are generally hot, dry- do you have a fiery personality? For more moisture, simply spritz a couple more times!

Although I have not yet used it in the summer, I bet it would feel great after being out in the heat.

This is the one that I use- you can find it at your local health food store.

So, give it a try!

Yours in Life and Health,
Tara

Update: 1/23/14

I've used Rose Water Glycerin for over 5 years now. Here is what else I have learned:

It's a terrific moisturizer for the summer. It's light and refreshing. It also helps calm sun burn!

It's terrific in the winter if you just need a little moisturizing. Perhaps you have naturally moist skin and just need a boost, or just a nice spritz in the middle of the day to balance out the dry air.

I used it on a significant steam-caused burn I got while cooking two days ago. I spritzed my burned finger when I changed out ice-packs and my finger was great the next day. I could do all may normal activities and it did not blister!

This is a great product to have on hand!
